Dear Media, Youth & LGBT2 Leaders:

Pride London Festival and members of London’s LGBT2 Community are pleased to announce the first annual Rainbow Leadership Award for Youth. If you know a deserving youth then please complete the attached application form and send by mail to Rainbow Youth Award Committee, c/o 188 John Street, London, ON, N6A 1P1, by Friday March 18th, 2011. Click here to download the pdf Application Form (584KB)

The Rainbow Leadership Award for Youth will honour an area high school student for accomplishments and contributions he or she has made to the community, whether this be at home, school, religious institution, athletic or academic team, or another social group. Candidates must be on track to graduate in the 2010/11 academic year, balance being a student and being a leader, and demonstrate a commitment or significant contribution to developing tolerance and acceptance of London and Middlesex County’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and two-spirited people or any community group represented under the diverse Rainbow banner. Consideration will be given to academic performance and personal or financial hardship. The recipient will receive a certificate accompanied by a monetary payment towards his/her tuition at a Canadian postsecondary educational institution.

The Award is made possible through the Rainbow Youth Fund, a fund held at the London Community Foundation.

The Award was originally created in 1997 by Richard Hudler and Jonathon Bancroft-Snell in association with but separate from the Homophile Association of London Ontario (HALO) as a means to give back and develop future leaders within London's LGBT2 community. During London Pride festivities on Sunday, July 25, 2010, following the annual Pride Parade, over $2,000 was raised pushing the fund to over $10,000 and making distribution finally possible.

The Award Selection Process will be conducted by Jurors on the Awards Committee, as determined by Pride London Festival and the fund originators, who will review all nomination forms and select the recipient. Decision by committee is final. The winner will be notified by phone or email with the final announcement made following the Annual Pride Parade in 2011.

Please share and distribute this release broadly to ensure eligible youth have the opportunity to apply. On behalf of Pride London Festival, and members of London’s LGBT2 Community thank you for your nomination and support to community leadership.
