Today Erin, Heather and I ventured over to a local highschool to set up a mindyourmind booth to try and inform some of the students...
there about what mindyourmind is all about. It was quiet when we got there but before long the halls were crawling with all sorts of students. We set up a table filled with a variety of MYM stuff; postcards, brochures, business cards, posters, and of course stickers….which always seem to be a huge hit! The nurse from the school also donated some chocolate milk, lip gloss, and locker mirrors that we used as prizes for the students; sort of an attention grabber. As soon as the word FREE is out there people seem to really be interested.
We brought a laptop to set up the MYM website and we started to get some of the students over to play the “Squish’em game” online. If they played the game and lasted for a certain amount of time they won a prize. They seemed to really like this. It also got them asking questions about what MYM is and how to access it, which is great! Only one student could be on the computer at a time and everyone seemed to want a prize so we decided to ask some of the students in line a question: Have you ever helped a friend in need? And what exactly did you to help them? We got some great answers from this and it got the students thinking about what they would do if a situation occurred where a friend really needed someone to talk to. It was also really awesome to hear some of the students say “Oh, mindyourmind? I’ve been on that site before.” We loved to hear that people are accessing our website. Overall, the day was a great success. By the end of it our table was nearly wiped clear of MYM stuff.
Later that afternoon our weekly MYM meeting took place. We talked a lot about the conference coming up Thursday. We spent most of the meeting in break off groups as well as a large group discussing, planning and brainstorming ideas for the conference. A lot of great ideas got started and by the end of the night we had built on those ideas and worked them into the conference itinerary. We are all very excited to get a voice and hopefully improve the system! Stay tuned for feedback from the conference! :)
