Aboriginal Comic Books About Health and Social Issues

E-mail Print PDF

I came across The Healthy Aboriginal Network and found some really well done comic books on their site. They create comics about health and social issues like suicide, mental health and gang awareness. I read the one about suicide, called 'Darkness Calls', about a boy who is bullied at school and mistreated by his teachers. Feeling isolated and sad, he contemplates suicide, but with some help, he finds his way out of the darkness. I thought it was really neat that the comic book was written from an Aboriginal viewpoint and includes a lot of cultural aspects. You can order your own copies, or just check them out on the site. Also, check out their youtube account, where you can find animated videos, with some of them in the native language of the Gitxsan indigenous people of British Columbia, Gitxsanimaax.
