As Canadians, this September 19th, most of us will be celebrating, acknowledging or running, in commemoration of Terry Fox, a household hero known for his determination to find a cure for cancer.

But we have something else to be proud of too! Battling mental illness stigma. One pedal at a time. That is the tag line of Ride Don’t Hide, a remarkable global journey and movement that Michael Schratter, a teacher from Vancouver, has embarked on since August 1, 2010. His goal is to raise awareness about the stigma that surrounds mental illness in order to eliminate it. His mission is to cycle 40,000km, across 6 continents, including 30 countries! He is raising money for the BC division of the Canadian Mental Health Association and their youth and adolescent educational initiatives.

To date, Michael has cycled 5600kms and raised $22,909.00. Follow his progress, share your story or offer your support on ride don’t hide .

If we talk about the absurdity of mental illness stigma it will begin to disappear.  If we can share the common story of how mental illness affects our lives, we will see it for what it is — a variation of the human condition. To harbour mental illness stigma is to harbour a stigma against humanity.”

– Michael Schratter
