Mentally ill people are dangerous and violent

E-mail Print PDF

Not true. However its one of the most common myths and misconceptions about mental illness. The media often portrays mentally ill people in this light. News stories, movies and even TV shows, make a strong connection between mental illness and violence. In fact, people with a mental illness are more likely to be the victims, rather than the perpetrators of violence. Recent studies show that it is not mental illness that increases one’s tendency to be violent, but that drug or alcohol use is a primary contributor.

There are other myths as well.

"Children and youth don't get depression".
Wrong again. They do and being profoundly sad is not just a normal part of growing up. Untreated depression can disrupt normal development.
