Hate. To me, this is what causes a lot of mental illness. Yes, chemical imbalances in the brain can cause mental illness, especially some of the more genetically based ones, like schizophrenia and OCD. But what about depression, anxiety, eating disorders, cutting, etc.? Yes, those can all be caused by genetics as well, or loss, or many factors but a large majority are also caused by hate. Sometimes mental illness can be prevented if people weren’t put down, bullied, called names, teased, ridiculed, abused, or made to feel unimportant, undervalued or worthless. I saw this picture on a video and captured the screen shot because it spoke volumes to me.

“stupid”

“moron”

"incompetent”

“hang yourself”

“door knob”

“loser”

“i hate you”

“you’re poor”

“go to hell”

“fat”

“dumbass”

“shoot yourself”

“creep”

“failure”

“no one likes you”

“worthless”

“idiot”

“fool”

“weak”

“give up”

“queer”

“freak”

"ugly"

Why do we fucking say these things to people???? In my opinion, this is what causes pain. This is what causes low self-esteem and low self confidence and shame and fear and guilt for being yourself and hopelessness. This is what makes the world a difficult place for some people to be in. This is what causes some people to be depressed, have anxiety, starve themselves or puke or even kill themselves...

Whether these things are coming from classmates, parents, siblings, teachers, or whoever – it’s bullying and it’s emotional abuse! No one deserves it. There’s no excuse for it.

So if you’re dishing it out, ask yourself why you’re doing that. Where did you learn the hate? Where did you learn that it’s ok? Why are you hurting someone else? Were you ever on the receiving end of this? If yes, how did that make you feel? Recognize that if you’re talking to and treating someone in this way, you need help too. Whatever’s causing you to act this way towards another person is coming from somewhere. Don’t perpetuate the hate. It hurts everyone. If you're a bully, you need just as much help as the people you are hurting. Think about it.

Hate is the only reason a co-worker can keep from killing himself. He puts down everyone and is seen to smile ONLY when he has made someone cry, become physically I'll, quit or lose their jobs. He counts joy if he can cause the primary "bread-winner" to be unemployed; especially if they have children who will innocently suffer. I feel the US should criminally charge these "homo sapiens" AKA: rabid beast. "Life, plus 90 years" is the minimum sentence of anyone found guilty of this heinous crime, and never allowed the kindness of a death penalty. Additionally, they should not be feed, housed (protected from elements), clothed, or receive medical attention,

I work with a creature so vile that it is difficult to classify him as "homo-sapien". His all consuming hate is his ONLY purpose for living. This barbarism is manifested by targeting those who will not join him. Under the weight of his lies and torment, they often become quite sick, eventually they lose their jobs. Since he is alone, all energies are especially aimed at sole supporters, with children. To feast on the suffering of adults is terrible,
but to cause little children to suffer from parental loss of income is beyond comprehension! I believe this man should be charged criminally. When found guilty, "Life without parole" is the minimum punishment. Under no circumstances should the kindness of a death penalty be given! While incarcerated, he must pay retail rental prices relative to the area. If unable to pay, he should be
housed outside, naked, and without nourishment until
dead. Afterwards, his body will serve as nourishment for
wild animals and/or left to entirely decompose. NO BURIAL is permitted. No marker, or any type of physical evidence is to be displayed that may even imply he ever existed!
We can no longer permit this level of hatred continue.
(This article excludes ALL who are mentally ill, and references ONLY those who use hatred like a weapon of destruction).

    Hi Diana

"Dimscripts" has a wonderful way of remembering the "September suicides" which touched so many and brought so much attention related to this issue. This song really strikes to the heart of it. Thank you for the link.

    Hi Keri,
Absolutely, the point of the blog is to provide a safe space for conversations to take place around the issues of mental health or related topics of interest. It is intended to share resources and any other helpful information as well as provide an opportunity to think critically about various issues.

It is not limited to topics of a serious nature only and humour can also be found as helpful by some. We choose not to make judgment calls on what is posted. Everyone has a right to contribute, so long as the message is not hateful or harmful.

I appreciate your feedback and hope you will continue to let us know what you think. mindyourmind is shaped by feedback from youth such as yourself.

Again im not trying to be rude, but isn't the point of the blog to be helpful, and look for feedback that can be of some use? I just think that b/c you get to choose what is posted, not posting something like that might make those ppl realize that this site is not a joke?

that the things found on here are meant to be helpful and maybe provide guidance to ppl who need it!!
My thing is that things on here might not be taken seriously or professional if you just allow anything to be written!
    Thanks for the quick response!

    Hi Keri,
Thanks for your feedback. To clarify, we do not censor anyone's comments. The only time we will not post a comment is if it is hateful or harmful. That is, if someone is disclosing a plan to harm themselves or someone else. The purpose of moderating comments is to ensure the safety of our visitors. Hope that helps.

about the monitoring thing is the person who is watching over it not really reading them b/c @ Nicks comment I don't know if that really needs to be shared? It is not relevant at all...... I know there is such a thing as freedom of speech but really who is that amusing but a 12 year old mind?!!!

  • Hey Anne
Thanks so much for your comment. Its an argument that we've had REGULARLY amongst ourselves for YEARS. Do we open it up completely or don't we? There are many issues to consider... less about 'inappropriate comments' (we have a pretty high tolerance for those so long as they aren't hateful) and more around safety and disclosure concerns. The other issue is that we don't have the resources to support monitoring over the weekend.
However, I will tell you that your comments are going to be brought up to the team for consideration. Its an issue that we need to discuss again.
Thanks again for your honest feedback.

While I believe that bullying is a serious issue that needs to be addressed in the community through cooperative interventions involving teachers, principles, parents, peers, and so forth, let us not forget the worst kind of hate, and what I feel to be one of the strongest influences on mental illness: SELF HATE.

Where does this self hatred come from? Does it come from the bullying? Does it come from lack of support? Perhaps.
Or perhaps somewhere along the line, between childhood, teen years, and young adulthood, we become lost.
Lost and confused about who we are, we search for ourselves in shopping malls, magazines, on Facebook and Youtube. We distract ourselves and form this mask of false emotions to show the world that yes, we can cope....yes, we fit in.
Our lack of awareness for who we are is covered up.
And yet behind closed doors we are suffering. We take out our self hatred with knives, pills, food, alcohol...or whichever crutch we have found to feed the urge to feel those honest feelings. We don't know who we are, so we find something tangible to remind ourselves that we are alive.

What has happened to our sense of self? -- our inner core that makes up our identity and that is meant to hold us together even under the worst of circumstances. That basis for resilience.
What has happened to our self value? -- our ability to say no, to express and respect ourselves, to know that words of others should not truly affect how we feel about ourselves.
Do we know who we are anymore?

Do we need to stop bullying? ABSOLUTELY.
Do we need to stop the self bullying? ABSOLUTELY.

Something needs to be done.....but what?

I really want to comment, but I know it will take days for my comment to be approved. If the goal of this blog is to start a conversation I think mindyourmind needs to remove the authorization and monitor the comments are remove inappropriate comments when necessary. Otherwise, I don't want to share with friends when I can't get a conversation started. hope you listen to me advice as i am someone who regularly use the site.
