I love this article. I love that a young person was able to find the support in a system and society where anyone with a mental illness is made an ‘outsider’. What an empowering example of mental wellness with a mental illness. I love it. There is hope, there are connections we can make, suggestions we can use in our daily lives to manage day to day. This young person has obviously gone through a lot, but was a survivor in that she didn’t give up on herself, and that she allowed those who could to help her get through the worst and move towards a healing space.
Our diagnosis’ will never ‘go away’ but they don’t have to control who we are, they are a part of us – not what labels us, what tells people who we are, what we are passionate about – it’s another lens that we live through. What do they say.. it influences but does not define us. Again, what a powerful story.
And what a good point to bring up – the media and it’ s skewed version of what mental illness looks like, what treatment looks like … and we wonder where stigma and discrimination comes from. Misrepresentations and ignorance.
