For the past two days, my wife and I have been snowed- in at our home in London, ON. Many businesses are shut down, roads are a mess, highways have near no visibility, and our life has come to a standstill. As for the weather forecast, it’s calling for more snow, another 20-30cm today.
Can’t lie Monday when they declared a snow day, I was a little excited. It reminded me of the snow days from my childhood? A snow day meant the schools were closed, winter clothing came on, the GT’s came out, and snow construction and fun would start. It was a day filled with fun and laughter, getting wet and dirty, and having a grand time in the elements.
But at this age, I have to say it hasn’t been as much fun! Environment Canada says some parts of London, ON have received more than 90 cm of snow with more expected over next 24-48hrs. The majority of our 2 snow days have been spent shovelling, helping my neighbours who aren’t as capable and pushing cars that’ve been stuck in our unplowed road. All a far cry from making snow forts, gt-ing or the free for all snowball fights I so much enjoyed when a was young.
My heart goes out to anyone who has to shovel the snow during this storm or drive through it as they travel to and from their office or place of work that is still open. I wish all of us could have a carefree snow day -- Even if you love your jobs (like me), it’s sweet to do nothing.
Wouldn’t it be great to have an extra national holiday where you don’t have to do anything special -- just feel free as a kid on a snow day?
