The Team
Street Team 2007
Traditionally, or at least as far back as band traditions go, a Street Team was a group of typically youth who helped advertise for their favourites bands by helping put up posters for upcoming concerts. The Mindyourmind.ca Street Team is a little different but with the same basic idea, minus the postering. Our main goal as a team was to promote the website and to help further develop it but we did so much more in the process.
In place of posters: a camera, our voices, our minds.
We interviewed everyone from local bands playing at the Central Library as part of their LOUD Series, to artists taking part in a mental health art show at The Art's Project known as "Framing the Phoenix." We even interviewed some of you in the streets to get to know more about what the youth of the world think. We used our voices to speak out our ideas surrounding youth issues in our community and around the world, asking questions and giving ideas for improvement. We even met with some agencies that are looking to incorporate youth advisors in their practices to let them pick our brains and see what youth really think! The team brought the idea of reaching out, through the Reach Out Game, to various conferences including a job career expo where we met tonnes of cool people and connected with a lot of different youth.
Our first major project as a team was to a build a puzzle piece collage, with each member decorating their own unique piece of the puzzle. Once it was put together, which was a bit of a task and we have the hilarious video footage to prove it, it was a blended picture of colors and words that somehow, despite it's many different components...worked! This is basically how the Street Team works. We're a group of incredibly different youth, some members are in highschool, some university, some are just working. Some members love rock music while others prefer pop and some are slightly obsessed with hockey while others love to write. Yet we all fit together in a crazy, fun loving group of youth. Kind of like a puzzle of widely varied puzzle pieces. Odd how that works.
No member of this team will walk away unchanged by their experience. Every time we got together there was something learn to new and experience. There was always laughter and fun, one of our main rules said we had to have fun and we of course obey the rules, but there was also great discussions and ideas. As a team we helped developed some great ideas for the site and hopefully reached out to youth around the world and encouraged them to do so in turn. Because, after all, that's what mindyourmind.ca is all about.

Why I became...
I learned about mindyourmind from my WOTCH worker, who introduced me to the website. After spending a great deal of time navigating the site, I became
interested in pursuing a volunteer position with them. I felt it would look good on a resume, as well as be a positive learning experience.
Getting involved...
Street team was a very fun experience. I learned quite a bit, and took with me the experience of trying new things like doing interviews. I enjoyed the creative process involved in recording minute blogs, as well as the projects we did outside the office. During the focus groups we held on subject matter for the site, I felt that my opinion was valued. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience.

It’s all about the puzzle piece...

On my puzzle piece, I placed the desert landscape, as well as a few other images which to me depict this sense of openness, of feeling lost. I have placed an image of a watch next to a picture of Earth, and figures representative of various global division. This is intended to convey my fascination on the unknown variables of time, with the turbulence of politics, as well as areas affecting our own lives. At opposite ends of my piece, I have placed the image of a forest, and of a bedecalled truck, standing-out in front of a landscape. These are intentionally meant to juxtapose the ideas of not seeing the forest for the trees, and not seeing the trees for the forest. The figure of Neo is intended to embody the concept that we are living in our own version of the "Matrix" when we allow our minds to be influenced by outside propaganda, and our ideals to be manipulated by agendas not our own.
In the centre, I placed a plus sign to symbolize my strive to maintain my positive outlook. I placed an icon representative of a yin-yang symbol, in which I placed the I-ching symbols for tranquility, and obstruction. Tranquility, is made up of three yin lines, on top of three yang lines. Tranquility, therefore, is a translation of heavenly wisdom coming down to Earth. Obstruction, is made up of three yang lines over top of three yin lines. Obstruction, therefore exists, when heaven remains elusive above us. This relates my personal reflection on the I-ching. I intentionally left a great deal of empty space. This represents to me, that with an open mind, there is constant room for growth.

Why I became…..
I discovered mindyourmind.ca by walking past it in the mall. It's youth friendly environment drew me in. At first I was intrigued by the many different ways that mindyourmind.ca reached out to the public, and thought it was a great opportunity to do my part in the community and maybe help some people at the same time, even if I have to be filmed and interview celebrities in the process. After learning more about mental health and being more aware of it in, especially in an education related environment such as school, it has caused me to realize how important mental awareness is and how it affects everyone. It makes me want to reach out to my friends and let other people know that they are not alone.
Getting involved……..
My time spent with the mindyourmind.ca street team taught me that there are people all over the world who feel and think the same way. Everywhere people struggle with difficult issues and feel alone, but they aren't. And there will always be a place or a someone that you can turn to for help. I was able to discover how to help friends in all tough situations and to speak out my opinion. Now, not only am I more aware of mental illnesses, but I have learned important aspects that differentiate them. Now, I am more prepared to take action when I feel that a friend needs me. I know that there are many different tastes that young people are attracted to, and many ideas.

poutine and green eggs and ham

Arts
If you could be in any movie, what movie would it be?
Love Actually
If you won a trip to anywhere in the world for one week, where would you go?
To the deserted island I was on that Kraig saved me from with his boat and then I’d call him back to save me again.
If you could chill out with any musician, who would it be, and what would you do with them?
The Spill Canvas and I would convince the lead singer, "NICK" to leave his band mates because I believe that his music was better and more unique before he joined his band members. And I would convince him to run away with me to my deserted island and eat poutine with him. Then call Kraig to save us again.
What’s the one thing you haven’t done in your life, that you absolutely must do?
Affect (or effect?) people with my witty sense of humour and natural intellect. And LIVE LIFE. haha. and laugh alot. you must LAUGH!
What makes you sad?
Losing/and someone stealing my ipod. That was my life. You broke my heart. I am heartbroken. </3 (<- broken heart) Having bi-polarism, I don’t know if I have it, but it feels like I do a lot sometimes. That makes me not laugh which makes me sad.
What makes you happy?
Laughing. Being with friends, listening to music. Having fun (<-big range) Not worrying about school or stress or time. The moment when everything is loud and you just sit and watch everyone be happy and it makes you happy, but not in a creepy-stalker way. And when you’re on the bus in the season of fall and you watch the leaves fly.
What’s your fav. way to deal with stress?
Get away from people and the world. Spend some time alone and try to forget about what I’m worrying about or what stresses me out. I try to have fun, listening to music, hanging out with friends.
Best piece of advice someone’s given you?
"DON'T FORGET TO SMILE"
How do you reach out to a friend when they’re down?
I literally REACH OUT and HUG them. I let them know that I am there for them and that they can talk to me anytime and have FUN!!!!
Who’s your role model or hero and why?
My little brother... (isn’t that sad?) but, no joke, he's amazing! He’s so smart and good at everything that I can always ask him for help on my homework. Haha… and we actually get along…. sorta.
It’s all about the puzzle piece…
The Street Team Puzzle Piece was the first project that we worked on. My piece is exciting because it is a CORNER PIECE!! YAY! Corner pieces rule. So. I included a lot of details that I like in general, such as the brown plaid, because brown is my favourite colour! Another important section that most people don't notice are the hidden gold, smooth chains that eventually turn into sharp, spiked wires. It represents that some innocent looking or not dangerous could turn into something completely different without warning. I also included a lot of words that hopefully make people think about their current situation and don't take life for granted.
These include: "Today", "Paradise" and "Wajda". Other images that I just thought were interesting were the man looking out onto the great big world with so many possibilities, and the street intersection where so many people pass everyday. It is such a concentrated location that connects so many people in such a random way. Other cute stuff that I liked was the big strawberry and lifesavers (with come in all colours and shapes) and the heart with the faded skull. The puzzle piece was really fun and probably my favourite accomplishment at mindyourmind.ca.

Why I became at st.teamer...
I first learned about the mindyourmind.ca Street Team through my sister Michelle. She was a member of last year's team and really enjoyed the experience. When I found out this year that the team was starting up again I jumped at the chance. I've had a long-standing interest in mental health issues and the resources, or more specifically, the lack thereof, for youth. I myself have suffered from mental health problems and have seen my friends go through similar things. I wish that I had known more about this resource when I was going through hard times and would like to make sure that other youth across the world have the opportunity to access the site and its resources when they need help, or need to give help.
Getting Involved...
One of our first meetings was spent setting down ground rules, and the rule that was most strongly supported was also the simplest: "Have fun!" This rule was adhered to strictly and I can't remember a meeting or event where there wasn't laughter. However, beyond the laughter there was a lot of great work being done. I feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride when I realize how many people we have helped to reach with our work. As our fearless leader often reminds us of, mindyourmind.ca is visited by over 150 countries across the world. It's almost humbling to think that the few hours I spent each week, doing what felt like hanging out and eating junk food, has actually helped create something so widespread. Through my work with the Street Team I've also been introduced to some great opportunities that I never would have had a chance to experience otherwise. Including another volunteer position that has me travelling across Ontario and furthering the ideal of reaching out to others. And of course I've had to come to terms with some personal anxieties such as being on camera and having my picture taken. So not only did I have a great time with the Street Team, I can also say I accomplished some great work, faced my fears and made some great connections for the future.

Best piece of advice someone’s given you?
Follow your dreams no matter how impossible they may seem
How do you reach out to a friend when they’re down?
I think the most important thing in supporting a friend in need is just being available to listen to them. I find most people, when they are upset, just need someone to talk it over with. I try to give advice if I think I can offer something constructive. At the very least I can offer empathy and a shoulder to cry on if needed.
Who’s your role model or hero and why?
I admire many people but there is no one person who I would consider a role model. I admire people who are not afraid to stand up for their rights or for the rights of others. Those who follow their own paths no matter what obstacles seem to stand in their way. In general, activists, feminists, human right advocates, musicians, and artists. I look up to people who stand out in a crowd, and could
It’s all about the puzzle piece…
When I first started working on my piece of the puzzle, I was frustrated and confused. There was a massive pile of magazines in front of me and I was told to create something that represented myself. A collage to fit in the piece of the giant Street Team puzzle. The first piece I started putting together, and to this day still my favourite, is also the one that immediately catches my eye. A woman's face with the word "DREAM" covering her eyes and "Will you listen?" covering her mouth. I created this out of inspiration from a magazine with a picture of George Bush on the cover with the caption of "Will he listen?" Much of my puzzle piece contains political and activist messages so I won't go into details about my feelings regarding the President. Back to the story. I chose the word dream and then covered the woman's eyes because I often feel myself blinded by my dreams. I am a daydreamer but also an idealist. I love to think of what may come. I then covered her mouth with "Will you listen?" because I feel that as a youth, and perhaps especially one with tattoos and piercings, I am often disregarded as stupid, immature...not worth listening to. I polished off the rest of the puzzle with various pictures of things I enjoy or care about, including a sunflower and the word "healing" to represent my belief in Spiritualism and my practices as a Spiritual healer. "You have no razor" was to resemble my history of self abuse and cutting my attempts to stop. There are so many things about my puzzle that I would love to talk about, every picture and every word but there's only so much space. So look for yourself...find out more about me through my artistic expression. And see how we all fit together.

Why I became...
I became a street team member because I was looking for some experience in helping others and I thought mind your mind would be a good place to start. I started at mind your mind in the anti stigma campaign, a program geared towards getting the stigma out of mental health. I was the youngest member but learned a lot and made me want to continue with mind your mind. Later that year I volunteered for the street team, where once a week me and others that were a part of the group came in and talked about mental illness and came up with ways to stop the stigma. We created videos, did interviews, created awareness about the site, wrote blogs, and had a great time. Even though I did get all my community hours I would love to come back out and volunteer again and help and learn even more about mental health.
Getting involved...
Looking back on the six months I spent here at mind your mind a part of the street team I wouldn’t trade a second of it. I learned so much and even if I didn’t get volunteer hours I would definitely do this again. I learned a lot and now have a greater awareness that I will have the rest of my life about mental health from being a part of the street team. I loved all the people and the open ended discussions, the staff, and working and coming up with ideas and input that will go on the site for many people to learn just as much as I did. I personally loved the You Tube videos and all the time and bloopers that went into them. Mind your mind is a great mental health program and website and being a part of it and learning so much is amazing, especially when I need to use this information I will now have it.

Why I became…
I became a member of the mym street team because I truly feel it's important to get involved with ones community. I also feel that the issue of mental health should be considered a serious one and that the negative stigma society has attached to it needs to be removed. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity for me to get involved with other people my age who share the same values as me and to hopefully make a difference (no matter how small).
Getting involved...
Having spent 6 months as a member of the street team I feel that I've learned and experienced so many new things. I not only became more aware of the issues surrounding mental health and I also met 6 incredible individuals, all of whom come from very different backgrounds. I feel that over these months we've developed a very unique bond and have shared numerous laughs.

A Piece of the Street Team Puzzle...
My puzzle piece is a collection of several different pictures; some of which represent me and my life and others just some pictures that I found appealing. I chose a lot of bright, descriptive pictures because I found those to be the most striking and powerful. I think the use of bright colours also gives the “viewer” the idea that I’m a bright and cheerful individual! Haha! I tried to find words that were both powerful and honest- something that would grab your attention or stop and make you think about it for a while. I chose both French and English words because I’m fluent in both languages.

Why I became a Street Team member…
I became a street team member because I wanted to make a difference for a change, without even thinking of being paid. It felt really good, trying to understand other people's problems as well as my own, and understanding that mental health was a major issue : but an issue with a solution.

Why I became a Street Team Member…
I became a street teamer to promote mental health awareness. I believe that there are a lot of misconceptions about mental health, and a site like mind your mind is informative to a very vulnerable age group. Being a youth myself, I thought that mind your mind was a worthwhile project and was something I wanted to be a part of.
Getting involved gave me…
Mind your mind has been a great experience. I got a chance to help shape a fantastic website and work with some pretty cool people. One of my favourite activities was the filming and interviewing. It was super fun and I gained a little experience in journalism.

All About ME
My name is Tara and I/I'm:
probably the most amazing person ever!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what’s the one thing you’d HAVE to have with you?
I would bring lots of food! And then I would relax in my deserted island in the Caribbean with lots of food and sun!
If you had to eat the same thing every day for a year, it would be…
McDonalds… it never gets gross for me.
Coke or pepsi: rock or rap: sports or arts:
I can’t tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi and I don’t understand people who make a big deal out of it. I like sports but am actually the worst at sports. I would love to be athletic.
If you could be in any movie, what movie would it be?
I would be in a James Bond movie. They do the sweetest things and I’d do everything – and not get hurt doing it because it’d be totally safe with the experts.
If you won a trip to anywhere in the world for one week, where would you go?
I’d like to go to Australia because it’s the only country that is also a continent. I’d go on an exciting safari adventure! And I think kangaroos and koala bears are the best!
If you could chill out with any musician, who would it be, and what would you do with them?
I’d hang out with John Mayer and we’d go bowling. I bet he’s good at it.
What’s the one thing you haven’t done in your life, that you absolutely must do?
I would travel the entire world and do everything – while I’m still young. I’ll like skydive, backpack, road trips, bungee jump, party, climb mountains…. EVERYTHING. And I’m going to do it too.
What makes you sad?
When I’m fighting with other people. It’s always annoying because it’s so energy consuming and distracting. Also, when I’m poor (which is like always) and can’t do anything because everything costs money. And I find it annoying when people are talking in slang and I can’t understand what they’re saying but I’m too embarrassed to say anything. I really need to improve my vocab.
What makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy. Doing fun things I love, being with people I love. There are a lot of silly moments, happy moments in my life that makes my day. Thank god there are enough of those moments to keep me smiling.
What’s your fav. way to deal with stress?
I sometimes try to solve what’s making me stressed. But I’m usually to lazy to do that. Also there are times when there’s nothing you can do. I guess I just not think about it and I convince myself that everything will work out.
Best piece of advice someone’s given you?
“You’ll probably end up fine” When I was going through a rough time, I guess I realized that not everything will work out but some things will and I’ll be fine.

I give them lots of hugs
Who’s your role model or hero and why?
I wish I had one. I don’t think I’ve ever looked up to someone and was like I want to be just like you.
