The United Nations have proclaimed that August 12 be celebrated as International Youth Day. The theme for 2014 is "Youth and Mental Health."
Everyone at mindyourmind would like to say THANK YOU to all the community partners, supporters, sponsors and the YOUTH that all helped make this day as incredible as it was. We couldn’t do it without everyone’s support and participation.
International Youth Day Remix 2014 consisted of a variety of components including workshops, a youth vendors market, live musicians, chalk art, and the Take a Seat Make a Friend initiative.
Creative workshops included a hot docs documentary, corn husk weaving, tarot card reading, breakdancing, how to make radio PSA, yoga and more! All workshops were co-facilitated by youth, and all took place in Citi Plaza, The ARTS Project and ONE Hip Hop Studio.
Youth also had the opportunity to create chalk art to represent what self expression means to them. The finished product will be installed in the food court in Citi Plaza. The day closed off with an after party, at The ARTS Project, featuring live music, spoken word, breakdancing, fantastic door prizes and of course, food!
The day was a great success! Our hope for this event was that by offering a variety of activities, youth were able to connect different forms of self expression to their overall wellness and well being.
“As a youth myself, I was inspired to see how capable my peers are. It makes me proud to see how much progress we as youth have made for talking about mental health. Thank you for such a wonderful experience, it was such an honour to be working with engaged adults and youth to create this event for our community” - Amanda, age 21
