Shannon grew up in London, attending Saunders Secondary and STA high schools during her teen years. Before moving to Toronto to pursue voice studies at the University of Toronto, she was featured at various venues throughout the London region including the Canada Games, the John Labatt Center, and the International Children's Festival.

Throughout her short lifetime, writing music has grounded her - providing a place to write exactly what was on her mind...

Shannon Thomson, musician, singer, interviewIn her own words:

Music has always been what I've centered my life around, it has helped me through so much and provided extraordinary opportunities for me. My entire family is deeply involved in the art form which gave me an immediate appreciation for the stability it provides in my life. From singing in choirs, competitions and summer programs I have toured throughout Quebec and Ontario as well as represented Canada in Austria, Germany and Italy. There is nothing quite like singing for me. It allows me to express everything all at once. Completely.

My training began at the tender age of five where I was encouraged to project my voice and emotions in concert and competitions. I had a strong network of family and friends around me to encourage my success. Singing on stage was my moment to be free. On stage I felt no cares, no worries, no pressure. There is nothing else like it in this world.

I'm constantly challenging myself musically and writing about new topics. Once I master one instrument, I pick up another. There is so much to discover - I want to experience it all. When you are able to express yourself, immense growth can take place. The key is to let it happen. You've got to allow yourself to be honest about who you are and accept what comes. With all of my experience performing and having to "put on" for an audience, I believe that time off-stage is my time to be real. It's when that line blurs that you can be faced with a real dilemma.

Shannon Thomson, musician, singer, interviewThe greatest aspect of music is it's ability to be shared. Music has freed my mind and soul. Any time I can share in that discovery with another person - I am witnessing the greatest gift of all. The success of my private studio is a direct result of my excitement for my students' success. I watch them grow, trust themselves and explore their talents. I encourage them to make the music their own. Put their own spin on it and make it theirs. It is amazing to witness the progression of another person.

I wrote this song about the discovery of being real with yourself and others around you. No one is a stranger to feeling alone or having to face difficulties. There are lots of bumps along the way growing up, and if you can be patient and keep true to yourself you will learn to take life one step at a time, one day at a time. Once you can learn that one day is just that - one day of many - what's happened seems to diminish before your eyes. There are a million moments we'd all do again if we could to change the outcome of whatever happened, but they are what make us who we are today. This song has encouraged me to embrace myself and the person I am. Listen carefully to the words and learn to trust yourself. Everyday is a new chance to show your true self to the world so don't get caught up in the little things. Let the truth flow and free yourself - one day at a time.
