Skye Sweetnam

Skye Sweetnam, music, interviewmym: From an early age, you seemed to know that you were destined to make music. You describe a series of occurrences that brought you here but out of those which one do you believe is the most significant?

Skye:  My love for singing started at a very young age, as there was always music around the house. After starring in a few school plays my parents signed me up for acting classes, which turned into dancing classes and singing lessons. During one March Break when I was 12, my mom signed me up for "Popstars" day camp. I meet an amazing music teacher there, who encouraged me to take my singing seriously and introduced me to writing songs. Soon after, I made my first demo.

I happened to be spontaneously singing in a hair salon when I got my first real contact in the biz. One of the ladies sitting in the salon, getting her hair done, had a well respected music lawyer as a brother! My demo passed hands from the lawyer to a manager to a producer who I ended up writing my first album with. Next thing I know, I have a meeting in Hollywood with Capitol records! Pretty crazy eh?

mym: Who helped shape your musical style the most? Who are your influences, both in your personal life and in the industry?

Skye: I have had many really great teachers over the years. They've taught me all the things that have helped me in my career. I also find inspiration in all different media- like art and photography, video, and fashion. I m also inspired by other musicians.

mym: You had an opportunity to open for major pop icon, Britney Spears. How was that experience for you?

Skye: I had a great experience on that tour. I really don't think it all sunk in when it happened. It was one of the most amazing times I've ever had. My music was able to reach so many people in so many countries.

mym: If you couldn't make music what do you think you would be doing right now?

Skye: If I wasn't in the music business I would want to be doing something creative like graphic art or some kind of design.

Skye Sweetnam, music, interveiwmym: You've been nominated for a Juno Award for Best New Artist. Pretty impressive accomplishment- The awards are just around the corner- what are your thoughts and feelings?

Skye: I really didn't expect to get nominated. It's really exciting for me to be recognized in my home country. I m looking forward to meeting the other artists and hanging out in Halifax!

mym: At such a young age you demonstrate strength, courage and confidence. Our site aims to inspire youth to seek out their dreams and get help from others when things appear to be getting in the way. What is your best piece of advice for someone who is stuck and having a hard time?

Skye: When I'm having a bad day I just surround myself with things that make me comfortable. I listen to my favorite CD, watch my favorite movie or hang out with people that cheer me up.
Sometimes I'll indulge myself with some ice-cream!

The most important thing to remember is that there will be better days.
