Can you tell us about the origins of Suit of Lights - the name and the process of working with others to bring a musical vision together?
How did Suit of Lights come to be?
joe: A "Suit of Lights" is the name for a matador's costume. The idea is that we're hinting at the duality of nature: beauty and brutality.
I had written a bunch of songs, but Arun is really the one who made the record come to life because he had a unique vision for each track.
mym: You've been present on myspace for some time. How has this medium helped you expose your music to others?
joe: It's a huge help. You have a direct line with music fans. They can listen to your music. What more could you ask for?
mym: What are your influences?
joe: We listen to a ton of music, but the main influences for this project would be Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Radiohead, Bjork, Flaming Lips, Sparks.
mym: What is your 'musical/ artistic mission'?
joe: I just feel the need to write songs and put them out into the world.
For me, it's the way I communicate best. My hope is that people will pick up on what I'm sending out there... that's the goal.
mym: What role do you think music plays in shaping the behaviours, emotions or personal identity of others?
joe: I think art in general has to be among the most noble of ambitions. I believe it helps you grow in unexpected ways.
mym: What do you hope your music will inspire others to do?
joe: If it inspires anyone at all in a positive way, I would consider that a worthwhile accomplishment.
