Out of L.A., these four guys released their first post-hardcore rock album, Just Breathe, in 2005, following it up with White Lies, in 2007 and about to come out with a third, American Underwater, on September 29, 2009. You can expect this latest album to steer away from the edginess of the first two though, with a greater emphasis on vocal harmonies and music melodies. Lead vocalist and guitar player Pierrick Berube says, “I think we concentrated more on songwriting and the material, what the songs are about”. Get to know Pierrick more in our short q & a interview below. Questions written by mym volunteer Max, 17.
How did your band start?
Pierrick: We started back in 2004 in Los Angeles. All of us were part of other local bands and wanted to do something better, so we started LoveHateHero with the intention of being the best and taking it very seriously.
If you had to describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before what would you say?
Pierrick: Pop punk /new hardcore…Blink 182 meets Glassjaw or something in between
How do you deal with stress while on the road?
Pierrick: By taking walks, playing disc golf, doing something really fun or playing video games. It's really not that stressful to tour anymore. We know what we’re doing and know what to expect so were never surprised by anything.
How would you say your music speaks to someone who is going through a rough time emotionally or mentally?
Pierrick: I'm not sure, I write the lyrics when I am going through something emotionally or mentally, so I'm sure people can relate that way.
If your music was the soundtrack to a film what would the film be entitled?
Pierrick: Wet Hot American Summer
If you could put together the "perfect" line-up for a tour (with your band included) who are three other current bands that you would want to tour with and what would the tour be called?
Pierrick: Thrice, Glassjaw, Saves the Day, and LoveHateHero. It would be called the Know Your Idols Tour.
If you were to be responsible for any one hit wonder in history, which would it be?
Pierrick: “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baja Men
Is there a certain song that best exemplifies a certain type of struggle in your life?
Pierrick: No, they all do. Every song is about some kind of struggle I was going through at the time of writing.
What is one thing you can't live without on tour?
Pierrick: Xbox 360 and my iPhone, that's two but both are necessary.
Any final words for the viewers at mindyourmind?
Pierrick: Life is in you today, and you make your tomorrow. Keep that in mind always.
Much love,
Pierrick
