Kerli

Kerli, interview, band, musicPop singer Kerli believes in dreams and that they do come true. Releasing her debut album, “Love Is Dead”, this July 2008, she sings the song you’re sure to have seen the video of, “Walking On Air”. Creative and artistic, her uniqueness shows in everything from her songs to her fashion to her first music video. Growing up in an abusive household in Estonia was not easy for Kerli. Read on to find out how this affected her, how she stays motivated, and what gives her hope.

mym: You are a pop / rock singer from Estonia. Growing up in Estonia, did you ever think you would be where you are today?

Kerli: I always knew what I was gonna do and where I was gonna be, so actually getting here wasn't surprising to me.
I do believe dreams come true. You just gotta believe hard enough and work on it.

mym: What inspires your music and lyric writing?

Kerli: Oh, everything. absolutely everything:) I am always writing music in my head.
It's impossible not to be inspired living in this world. We just need to look instead of seeing and listen instead of hearing.

mym: You have a lot of great and unique outfits in your pictures and music videos. Is there someone that designs them for you?

Kerli, interview, band, music, Walking on Air music video

Kerli: Not really. I buy all this crazy stuff from random kids corners in vintage shops and stripper stores and put it all together. It's kinda hard to find people with the exact same vision as u, u know. I feel like stylists always wanna dress me way more safe than I do. But sometimes I meet the ones whos inner kid is still alive...like Frank Chevalier who we worked on clothes for walking on air video shoot with. He just rolled into my house with like 100 crazy outfits and we had the coolest time putting it all together.

mym: You've written about "feeling like an alien" and not belonging. What was this like for you and how did you change your situation?

Kerli: Well... I couldn't really change the situation until I started traveling and left home. What I could do, was to create as much art and stories as possible and get lost in my dream world every day. I wouldn't have done that if everything would have been peachy around me

mym: You've also written about experiencing some abuse growing up, is this correct? How did this affect you and what might you say to someone who feels they have no way out of an abusive situation?

Kerli: Yes, I grew up in an abusive home. It's hard as a child because u don't know any better and parents really don't understand how crucial it is for them to be a great role model for their kids. It wasn't until I started traveling and seeing the world when I realized that people screaming at each other 24/7 wasn't a normal thing to do.
My childhood has affected me deeply and I still get down and doubtful about myself and what I do a lot.
But I wouldn't really change a thing. It made me stronger, it made me forgive and it made me understand all the people who live like I did. I guess the hardest part is accepting. and understanding that what your parents do, have nothing to do with you. You are not horrible because they say so. They put u down because they feel bad about themselves and their lives. All u can do is to understand that there must have been a lot of pain in their lives - how else could they be so angry.
So understand, forgive and let go. And know that you are beautiful and can be everything that u wanna be no matter where u come from.

mym: What message would you want to send to someone that is thinking about committing suicide?

Kerli: I have been there, I know what it feels like when there is nobody who understands. But there is no problem in this world that can't be solved. There is no burden too heavy to carry. it was given for you to carry because u are strong enough to carry it. And after a long dark night, the sun will always come out. It would be against all the laws of nature of it wasn't so. There is so much beauty in this world, we should be thankful for our time here.

mym: What motivates you and gives you hope?

Kerli: A silent conversation with myself. I get down a lot and freak out about life. So before I go all crazy I try to sit down and think if things are really bad or is it just happening in my head. And sometimes I write down all the things that I'm thankful for. This always puts things in perspective.

mym: What do you do for fun or to relax?

Kerli: I like really simple things. I just hang out in my PJs and cook and clean the apartment. Or write music.

mym: Do you have any words to live by?

Kerli: I have many. it's so easy to have all these great quotes ready for other people when they need it but I'm not so great when it comes to giving advice to myself. Mostly I just try to look at the bigger picture and think what really matters at the end of the day. I do believe in creative visualization...so I always try to put all the positive energy that I can behind the things that I do. I really think that u get what u expect. And when things don't happen despite your efforts, they just weren't meant to be. And a bit later u understand why it was necessary - it brought something new and beautiful into your life.

mym: What are your plans or hopes for the future?

Kerli: I just wanna be happy. that's it.
