Easily “Slept On” Bands

Satellite - Bobby Ray

Earlier in the year Kanye West coined the term “pop-art”, referring to his latest release 808’s and Heartbreak. Not to throw this word around to soon ever since it was introduced to the musical community, but it could be said that Atlanta based rapper B.o.B. (otherwise known as Bobby Ray), is also creating the same kind of “pop-art”. Proof positive with the song Satellite, calmingly catchy and melodically sound while being very epic and powerful. It is a song that transcends the borders of regular music (which happens to run along side B.o.B./Bobby Ray’s philosophy, that all music on the radio is trash), although it will not make for a radio hit (see: B.o.B’s philosophy) it deserves to be one.

New Perspective - Panic! At The Disco

Notice the ‘!’? That’s right Panic! At The Disco are back. After losing their suspenders and Sgt. Pepper’s vinyl (along with two members) they have returned to their contemporary pop roots that made them so famous and irresistible. Enter their new tune “New Perspective” that boasts a very positive message about the future and what is to come from a band that is overflowing with potential. The riffs are catchy, the vocals and lyrics are earnest and the chorus is one of their catchiest yet. While they were knocked down for a couple rounds with the loss of two core members, the boys are definitely not out! It will be interesting to see where they take their sound with the release of a new album in the coming year.

We Can Try - Between The Trees

All the way back in 2006 I put the band Between The Trees on my radar for bands to watch in the coming year. Unfortunately they left their major label, and even with an amazing album (The Story And The Song) they were left behind in the shadows of other bands that had made it. Now three years later, we have a new release and a new single with “We Can Try”. The song soars and glides on the harmonies of the astonishingly powerful lead vocalist Ryan Kirkland. Between The Trees are band that cannot be slept on twice and this is a song that needs to be heard, inspiration and catchy: best of both worlds right?

brandnew

At The Bottom - Brand New

Every hipster and big city scene kid in the world will tell you that Brand New is the best band ever and all others pale in comparison. I never really understood the hype until I heard their latest single “At The Bottom”. It is a track that is roiling with emotions and strong lyrics that, while melancholy, are hard to resist and sing along to. Maybe I was wrong before when I dismissed these people as being uneducated in today’s music because this band really knows how to do it right and their new album Daisy will be on my “must-hear” list for the end of 2009.

Move Like You Gonna Die - Cobra Starship

Cobra Starship aren’t just the band who wrote the Snakes On A Plane theme song, they are the brainchild of scene idol Gabe Saporta and now have three albums under their belt. Their latest album Hot Mess features the track “Move Like You Gonna Die” that smoothly dishes out guitar parts and electronic harmonies with swagger-full lyrics (“I have the best taste in this whole place/ but i’ve had it up to here with the crowd). It’s a song promising a good time with a catchy chorus and ego stroking lyrics fit for the dance floor or the speakers of your car.
