Jonathan McLaren

Jonathan McLaren, art, artistWe first became of aware of Jonathan’s art work on MySpace.com. We loved the complex and surreal imagery. We loved it so much we told him so. Jonathan not only donated one of his images to our site, he also informed us that he’s doing a benefit event for us to raise awareness on the issue of mental health and support for the work that we do with youth. Jonathan has generously donated one of his originals as a graphic for all of you, to be used for your own personal use. Download this t-shirt design, print it on iron on transfer material and apply to a shirt.

Artist note:

The hand drawn piece has a lot of little meanings.  The figure is shown hanging by its limbs showing little signs of life.  One of the limbs goes through a large hole in the center of the head meant to symbolize an attempt to delve inward to deal with mental anguish.  The overall theme of the piece is how our mentality can be our ruin, so we must be careful to safe-guard our minds and be aware when things go wrong.

Artist Tip
Print it anywhere you like on the shirt but Jonathan suggests that you place it on the far left or right of the shirt (front or back), hanging down from the either shoulder.  We think that would be very cool too.  Take a picture of yourself wearing the shirt with this image and we’ll put your pic on our home page! Bio

Born: Toronto, July 15th 1983
Resides: Ottawa

Artistic expression has always played a major role in my life.  I have been drawing since I can remember.  It has always been something that has brought a sense of accomplishment to my life as well as a sense of peace.  Art is limitless, so I feel that when I put my imagination into a media, at the same time I am dipping into the pool of infinity.  Constantly in search of a means to define my own style, I draw much of my inspiration from other artist’s works.  I find that by interacting and sharing with other artists you begin to get a better idea on what makes your individual style unique.

Surrealism is my favorite choice of style.  That which could be but could never be, beyond both interest and intrigue.  The major theme behind my work involves a combination of individual interpretation by the viewer and guided interpretation by the artist.  Many of the forms I create and incorporate have no basis on reality, and can be openly interpreted as any number of things, however I also implement certain limits to confine and distill a theme.  I enjoy working with a variety of media, ink and water on canvas being my preferred choice.
