Sanity

E-mail Print PDF

How does it feel?
The droning hum of sanity.
You get up,
Go to work,
Smile at people,
Just because.
You pay your bills
Fix your car
You never use your power tools
To make yourself bleed
You eat your dinner
You never consider other uses
For that steak knife.
Never thought to take
More than the recommended dose
You go to bed
And fall asleep
And dream
You never wake up
Screaming
Bleeding
Crying
Running
From your dreams
Running from your life
Your tears don’t remind you of blood
Your blood doesn’t make you shudder with delight
Delight isn’t something foreign to you
You look in the mirror
To make sure
That your hair is in place
You don’t wonder how easily that mirror would break
I bet those edges would be pretty sharp
You live in that constant drone of sanity
Don’t tell me that you understand.
I have taken more
Than the recommended dose
Used that steak knife for other things.
I have tried to break that mirror
And yes, the edges are sharp
Very sharp.
You won’t understand
Until you lose your mind.
