Oxford Youth Expression

December 16, 2011 - The Woodstock and Area Community Health Centre employed six youth throughout the summer to create and design a youth website for Oxford County. The website is hosted by Woodstock and Area Community Health Centre in partnership with Addiction Services of Thames Valley, Community Employment Services, Fusion Youth Activity Technology Centre and mindyourmind.

A team of six youth led the initiative and developed a website for youth by youth. The youth decided the name of the website would be Oxford Youth Expression (OYE).

OYE is an interactive website designed for all youth. It is a safe online hub where everyone is welcome. OYE was created to support, help and assist youth with daily issues that they face. The five main website sections include: education & employment, everyday relationships, health & wellness, recreation & transportation and risky business. Unlike an ordinary resource website, OYE provides interactive opportunities where youth across Oxford County can connect. OYE offers a calendar of events that are hosted in Oxford, the Ask an Expert section allows youth to ask professionals anonymous questions.

“It’s a way to ask questions without feeling embarrassed or singled out,” said Lauren Upper, OYE Youth Leader. Another opportunity OYE offers, is showcasing local youth’s talents through the Arising Artists page. Youth can share their talents, whether it is music videos, poetry, artwork or photography. “With the goal of having a website for youth by youth, all of the website content was created by local youth”, said Samantha Halyk, OYE Team Leader. OYE partnered with mindyourmind to create and develop an interactive tool for the website. 'Stress Me Less’ was created in hopes of assisting youth to manage and cope with their stress.
