I had started a CAUSE on facebook for Depression and college students.
This is my story to get the ball rolling. It hasn’t worked so far…lol
Wow, depression has affected my life in so many ways. I had first developed depression at a young age. Not knowing anything about it, I took it personally. I had very low self esteem for a long time. Eventually my education was a worry because problems with concentration and focus started as early as high school. It really had made an impact on me in college though because it was a struggle to focus. Unfortunately, focus and concentration were not the only barriers, fatigue became an issue as well. I had barely completed my first year of the program and I decided that I didn’t want to continue wasting my time and money while I was barely scraping by as it was. I did not return for my second and last year of the program. From there I bounced from one job to the next due to lack of concentration and it was when I finally had enough that I decided to talk to a doctor about what was going on. At the age of 27 I was diagnosed with depression. It came as a relief to me because that meant that what I had thought was part of my personality, really wasn’t and it was explained to me that help was available. It took a while but I had received help for anxiety and depression. While it is still a struggle, I decided to go back to school and even though it has only been since September, it has been well worth it because I love my classes. The program I am taking now is going to allow me to help others that are struggling the same way I had.
I sincerely hope that my story has helped other students to realize that there is help out there and with the help, things do get better.
