Feel Good Friday: Cashier Chats!
Jumbo, a supermarket chain in the Netherlands, is implementing 200 chat registers, or “Kletskassas”, for customers who aren’t in a hurry and might be feeling in need of a chat with a cashier.
The chat checkouts are part of a Dutch health ministry program to help combat loneliness – particularly amongst the elderly – after a study done in 2019 by Statistics Netherlands revealed that approximately 26% of people aged 15 and older felt lonely, and that number jumped to 33% among those who were aged 75 or older.
A Jumbo representative reiterated that “Many people, especially the elderly, sometimes feel lonely. It’s a small gesture, but a very valuable one, especially in a world that is digitizing and getting faster and faster.”
Sometimes small gestures can make all the difference!
The idea of Feel Good Fridays started because we believe the simple things that bring a smile to our face are some of the best things. Smiling and laughing have been proven to reduce stress in our lives! When we smile or laugh it releases neurotransmitters in our brain called endorphins, which are in charge of making us happy and helping to relieve stress.
Remember to check back for our next Feel Good Friday!
