Feel Good Friday: Free Dad Hugs

When Scott Dittman heard that his friend Denna was heading to Pittsburgh Pride with Free Mom Hugs, an organization that assists LGBTQ+ people, he knew he had to go. He ordered a ‘free dad hugs’ t-shirt online, thinking it would only put a smile on people’s faces-- but it did more than just that.

Scott gave hugs to people all day, some were happy ones, others were with tears. Many participants had not received a hug from their dad in a long time, so this simple, warm gesture meant the world to many people.

Following the event, Scott decided to post about his experience on Facebook. He has since received thousands of messages from people whose parents didn’t accept them for their gender or sexual identities, and from those parents themselves. Some of those parents have even reached out to their children that they haven’t spoken to in years.

Scott gave individuals the support and acceptance that they so desperately needed in a matter of 30 seconds! Just think of what you can do to brighten someone’s day if you spend a minute or 5 minutes doing something kind. One small act by one person can have a huge impact on many. Remember love wins, not hate, so spread the love!

The idea of Feel Good Fridays started because, we believe the simple things that bring a smile to our face, are some of the best things. Smiling and laughing has been proven to reduce stress in our lives! When we smile or laugh it releases neurotransmitters in our brain called endorphins, which are in charge of making us happy and helping to relieve stress.
