Hi! I’m Simran
Hi! My name is Simran, and I’m a fourth-year student at Western University. I grew up in Markham, Ontario, and I live with my grandma, my dad, my sister, and my Havanese dog Thor.
At Western, I’m in an Honours Specialization in Media & the Public Interest, a program that focuses on the study of media, with an emphasis on social justice throughout the program. I am interested in the study of cultural theory, alternative media, and the history of various media texts.
Outside of my academics, I’m involved in a few other things at Western. I have a deep appreciation for my faculty, so I decided to become an ambassador. For the past couple of years, I’ve had the privilege of introducing grade 12 students to the programs I love so much.
WICSA is Western’s Indo-Canadian Student Association, and I have also been heavily involved in that organization for the past four years. I started as a photographer, acted as VP Communications in my second year, VP Affairs in third year, and am now the President (yay!).
I love photography and founded my own company, Memposa Photography, just a few years ago. My favourite subjects are usually individuals, couples, and families, though event photography is also becoming an area of expertise. There’s nothing more satisfying than capturing the perfect shot, one that you know somebody will treasure long past when your shoot ends.
All of this aside, my life has not gone unmarked by experience with mental health. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs, and I am passionate about helping other people get through theirs. mindyourmind seemed like an excellent fit for me because I genuinely respect what this organization stands for. They do a fantastic job of community outreach while also running a website and social media that is engaging, comforting, and informative. I’m excited to dive into my work at mindyourmind and cannot wait for what the next few months will bring!
