Meet, David, the newest addition to the mindyourmind team!
My name is David and I’m the latest addition to the mindyourmind team! I’m a student currently in my second year at Huron University, working on my Bachelor’s Degree in East Asian Studies. I love culture and language and I’m trying to learn Japanese. Anime, fitness and music are my jam. If I’m not at work, you can probably find me across the street in the gym. As for music, I mostly listen to post-punk, shoegaze and any alt-rock from the 90’s. If you didn’t understand the previous sentence, that’s fine. I just like music. Oh, and I collect vinyl, because deep down I’m 55 years old. Or does that make me a cool hipster now? I’m not sure. The most recent anime I watched that I really loved is called Kino’s Journey. It’s about a transgender traveller who rides a talking motorcycle to strange countries, like a country where murder is legal or a country that moves through other countries on giant wheels. It’s really weird, but amazing and will have you thinking about all sorts of philosophy and stuff. Check it out!
Five years ago, I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with acute depression and OCD. My own struggles with mental health have fuelled my desire to help others and learn more about how to better equip myself and others for the daily struggles people with mental illnesses face. I hope, through mindyourmind, to send the message to young people in Canada that they’re not alone and they don’t have to feel abnormal for whatever they’re going through.
I love to travel and I’ve lived abroad twice, once in Taiwan and once in Colombia. In 2020 I’m heading to Japan for my next adventure. I’m passionate about reform through education and I strongly believe that long-term change comes through teaching young people and empowering them to make positive change. mindyourmind is a great resource to bring long-lasting community-level change to youth in Canada and it’s super exciting to be a part of that. I’m here for the rest of the summer doing an internship and I can’t wait to see what summer 2019 will bring for me. I’m really happy to be a part of this team.
Bonus fun facts about me: I love 80’s horror movies, I have 6 tattoos and I’m a huge board games geek. No one can beat me at Monopoly. No one.
