mindyourmind Monday: Media
Hello hello! We’re back with another mindyourmind Monday, and this time we’re talking about what we’re reading, watching, and listening to.
Here’s what the team had to say about our recent media consumption habits:
Elora: I don’t know about you but I’ve been consuming A LOT of media lately. Currently, I’m reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, along with shamelessly listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, SOUR. In terms of what I’m watching, well I binge-watched the Wilds in about 2 days (SO good) and if I didn’t have to wait for a new episode each week, I would be doing the same with the Mare of Easttown! If you’re into suspenseful shows, I definitely recommend the two.
Seela: Recently I haven't been watching much, but I've been reading lots of fiction. I'm currently reading Sparks Like Stars which is great and I've been listening to lots of motivational/advice themed podcasts.
Carolyn: I'm a single parent and work multiple jobs, so when I get the chance I love to catch a movie on Netflix or work my way through a series, BUT here is my 100% getting watched list: I am a loyal General Hospital fan, and have watched the show since the 90s! I also love the new Charmed series and how they spun the story. The other thing that's always on is the Food Network; I LOVE the creativity and passion of culinary arts! Plus food is my favourite.
Michelle: I'm bingeing Money Heist again on Netflix. It's a Spanish series that you can watch with English subtitles or English dubbed over. I'm watching with subtitles and I think I'm picking up some of the language! Just kidding :D This is a fantastic story with many twists and turns - one moment I'm rooting for the inspector and the next for the robbers! I'm waiting patiently for the last season coming this fall. I highly recommend this one. As for music, my go to playlist is Spotify's Top 50 in Canada or anything from Childish Gambino!
Simran: If you’ve read any of my blogs, you know I can write for days! So let’s keep this short with lists... Music: afrobeats, reggaeton, 90s hip hop, dancehall. Shows: Parks and Recreation, Money Heist, Lucifer. Books: How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell, The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, and many of Anthony Horowitz’ murder mysteries.
Kyle: I just started reading A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum about crime and punishment in ancient Rome. The most recent movies I've watched are Army of the Dead and You Might Be the Killer - one of which is a fast, fun horror movie and the other is Army of the Dead. I secretly listen to retrowave music on YouTube but claim I'm listening to classic metal. Don't tell anyone!
Heather: I'm currently reading Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty. I'm just beginning it, but interested to learn more about how to apply some of these principles to my own life. It follows the story of a fellow who went to live with monks in an ashram for 3 years after realizing he was needing a major life change. How can the monk mindset help us find real meaning, passion and purpose in our life? I don't know yet, but it's grabbed my attention already learning how powerful meditation can be on our mind and body. Research has proven the positive and long lasting benefits we can gain from incorporating meditation into our lives. To find calm, stillness and peace - isn't that what we're all striving for :)
Having recently graduated from Media & the Public Interest at Western University, Simran resides in Markham with her family and her Havanese dog Thor. In addition to passions in mental health, media & cultural theory, and photography & design, Simran loves reading, playing various editions of Halo on Xbox, and dining out. She did her MPI Practicum with mindyourmind this past semester, and she is so excited to be back!
