Theatre production company supports mental health and mindyourmind

With every production, we endeavor to donate a portion of our proceeds to a Canadian organization directly affected by its major themes. For Blue/Orange, we will be donating to Head & Hands and mindyourmind.

The work done by organizations like mindyourmind is essential to maintaining a healthy community. Mental health is a subject of extreme importance in our society today. We all know someone in our immediate surroundings that is or has been affected by mental illness, and yet most of them have not received the appropriate care and support. We know that medical, psychological and social interventions can transform lives. When a member of our community doesn't have access to the resources he/she needs in order to overcome the challenges he/she is facing, the repercussions are felt throughout the entire community. By investing in an individual's well-being, the entire community will then benefit and inevitably grow.

The Third Eye Ensemble will be presenting Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall, a sardonically comic piece touching on cultural differences and mental illness. This 3-hander is set in a London psychiatric hospital and the action takes place within 24 hours. Christopher, a young black man, has been arrested in the streets for strange behavior. Following the mandatory 28-day stay, a Darwinian power struggle ensues between his doctor, Bruce, and Bruce’s supervising psychiatrist, Robert, as they clash over the diagnosis and treatment of Christopher. This incendiary tale highlights the issues of a disproportionate number of ethnic minorities in the health care system, and the labels that define a person’s acceptable actions/reactions. What color is an orange? You may think you know the answer, but maybe you don’t. And if you get the answer “wrong”, how will that be interpreted by your surroundings?
