Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill

I had a visceral reaction to watching this video - instantly sick to my stomach with anger, outrage and disbelief! David Bahati, Ugandan parliament member, has proposed a bill - the Anti-Homosexuality Bill Legislation that would criminilaze homosexuality in Uganda, punishable by death and life imprisonment for "aggravated homosexuality" (WTF?!?).  Bahati's absurd argument is that the bill is meant to protect children and "the family". Paul LeGendre, Human Rights First’s Fighting Discrimination program director,  debated Bahati on Voice of America yesterday. What fucking year is it? Cause it's almost as absurd as Hitler's holocaust or the hundreds of years of American slavery or burning "witches" at the stake. It is preposterous and absolutely a violation of fundamental human rights. Shouldn't it be international law that such bills simply CANNOT be passed??? Bad enough that it happens illegally in the form of bullying, bigotry and other hate crimes - but to legalize it???? It's as ridiculous as legalizing the criminalization of being a certain race! We turn our heads to a lot that goes on in the world, as though the oceans between us and the human atrocities that have gone on like the genocides in Darfur, former Yugoslavia, and Rwanda or the recent war in Iraq, for example, don't affect us. Maybe not directly or maybe not immediately - but allowing power in the hands of those who promote hate and international war crimes is a dangerous thing. And furthermore - does something need to affect us directly in order for us to stand up and take a stance against it? If it can happen in Uganda, it can happen in the U.S. It can happen in Canada. It can happen anywhere if we allow it to happen. We take for granted that we live in countries where Human Rights have progressed as much as they have. But it seems the fight against stupid is never over...
