World Suicide Prevention Day
This Sunday is world suicide prevention day. Unfortunately, 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from a mental illness and suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian youth (10-24). In the past 15 years, many people have recognized the importance of mental health and they have been working to raise awareness and help those living with mental illnesses. World Suicide Prevention Day was established in 2003, by the International Association for Suicide Prevention with the World Federation for Mental Health and the World Health Organization.
There are events happening all over the world and online to mark this day. For instance, this year the #LdnOnt London Middlesex Suicide Prevention Council invites you to their 12th annual Lifting the Silence memorial walk and ceremony, on Sunday, September 10th. This event is to honour those lost to suicide and their loved ones, and will take place in Victoria Park from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. There will be music, poetry, chalk art, memorial trees and more. Participants are invited to bring photos to contribute to a community album or a pair of new or gently used shoes to be donated to Mission Services of London. For more information check out their website or Facebook event.
