Many of you might have seen a popular meme going around on social media this week. The top half is a picture of a forest that says “This is an antidepressant”. The bottom half is a picture of pills that reads “This is Sh*t”.
The picture has caused a lot of people to weigh in, making their own edited versions of the picture to support their view. Largely, it has sparked a debate between medication vs holistic treatment.
On one side, people are arguing that the picture is valid. They make the point that there are plenty of alternative kinds of treatment, like nutrition changes and therapy, and that medication is often over prescribed when there are other, potentially healthier methods.
On the other side, people argue that medication genuinely helps a lot of people with a disorder, and saves lives. Chalking treatment down to needing to go for a walk is minimizing a serious illness, and could be dangerous.
I am here to argue something a bit different, and also extremely important- these things are both correct!
Everyone’s mental health journey is different, and recovery is not a one-size-fits-all. Treatment plans are as unique as the individuals who use them. Some people respond very well to lifestyle changes and talk therapy. Some people benefit best from medication. For many people, it’s a mix. No matter what treatment you choose, you don’t need to feel bad about it. There is no “wrong” answer. Choosing one kind that works doesn’t mean your illness is any worse that someone else who responds to a different kind.
An argument for medication vs alternative methods is missing the point- both have proven to be effective for different people. In the end, what works for you works for you, and no one should be able to tell you differently. Most of a time, a mix of both is necessary for a full recovery.
So I made my own version of the meme. I hope you enjoy.
