Feel Good Friday: A Milestone Long Overdue

Scarlett has been volunteering with mindyourmind since 2012 and is now a member of the staff team. As a Psychology graduate from King's University College at Western, she is passionate about all things related to the subject and is a proud mental health advocate. She also loves playing sports, spending time outdoors in the countryside, hanging out with friends and family, and playing board games.

The idea of Feel Good Fridays started because we believe the simple things that bring a smile to our face are the best things. Smiling and laughing has been proven to reduce stress in our lives! When we smile or laugh it releases neurotransmitters in our brain called endorphins, which are in charge of making us happy and helping to relieve stress!

This past weekend Lena Waithe, 33 year old actress and screenwriter, made Emmy history and topped off her shining moment with a beautiful speech addressing and praising the LGBTQIA community. Waithe is most known for her character “Denise” on the Netflix comedy-drama “Master of None,” that she also co-writes alongside Aziz Ansari. The pair’s writing for the show, specifically the “Thanksgiving” episode, won them an Emmy award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series this past Sunday. Receiving this award made Waithe the first black female to win this Emmy category, something that seems unfathomable to be “history-making” in 2017, after the 69 years that the Emmys have been running. The plot of the episode is based on Waithe’s personal experience of coming out as a lesbian, and chronicles her path to doing so over years of family Thanksgiving dinners. Hence, Waithe made a point to thank and celebrate the LGBTQIA community in her acceptance speech, sending a powerful message that the things that make us different are our superpowers and by wearing our “imaginary capes” we make the world a more beautiful place. What an incredible triumph and milestone for the black queer community and inspiration for all, you go girl!!

Remember to check back next week for the next Feel Good Friday! :)
