Feel Good Friday: Thomas' Christmas List

Scarlett has been volunteering with mindyourmind since 2012 and is now a member of the staff team. As a Psychology graduate from King's University College at Western, she is passionate about all things related to the subject and is a proud mental health advocate. She also loves playing sports, spending time outdoors in the countryside, hanging out with friends and family, and playing board games.

James and Cindy Dutton, of London, England, are incredibly thankful for a stranger on Twitter who helped them complete the Christmas list written by their 19 year old son (who has a learning disability and severe autism). They said that their son, Thomas, has been obsessed with children’s characters like Thomas the Tank Engine and Pat the Postman since he was 18 months old. While Thomas loves watching them on YouTube still to this day, he also loves having the old VHS cases to line up in his room. This year on his Christmas list was a VHS for the 1981 movie “Postman Pat’s Prize Postbag,” and it was the only item that his parents just could not find. They decided to take to social media to see if they could find anyone who may have a copy of it and, wildly enough, they managed to track one down in less than 48 hours thanks to a tweet James made that went viral. Thanks to their perseverance and the support and generosity of twitter users - who were mostly strangers to the Dutton family - Thomas is going to be filled with excitement Christmas morning! Isn’t it incredibly refreshing and heartwarming to hear positive stories about the power of social media and people coming together to help out a stranger? I thought so! The idea of Feel Good Fridays started because we believe the simple things that bring a smile to our face, are some of the best things. Smiling and laughing has been proven to reduce stress in our lives! When we smile or laugh it releases neurotransmitters in our brain called endorphins, which are in charge of making us happy and helping to relieve stress.
