Life can we challenging at times and can take support from many different people to stay healthy and reach your goals. Recently we caught up with Amanada from hello! True Self to learn more about life coaching and how it can support youth to set goals, develop health habits and thrive in their community!

Can you tell us a little bit about hello! True Self?

Our mission is to motivate & inspire youth & young adults to live to their fullest potential in their life, physical & mental health.

We offer coaching programs that use specific coaching techniques, support & accountability so our clients gain valuable tools, life skills & confidence; as we guide & cheerlead them through any obstacles or challenges they may face while trying to figure out who they are & what they want to accomplish. Our focus is to help shift from problems to possibilities, then turn these positive habits into behaviours that last.

We appreciate & celebrate each person’s unique journey by empowering them & providing the space for each individual to become & fully express their true authentic selves!

What is the difference between counselling & life coaching?

First let’s talk about counselling, also called therapy or psychotherapy. It focuses on past traumas/issues to change self-destructive habits, repair & improve relationships & work through painful feelings. Therapy asks, “How did that make you feel?” & uses that to guide the long term process of resolving past issues & understanding the root of problems with hopes to create a happier, more stable future.

On the other hand, life coaching is focused on the present & future, is results-based (driven by goals & taking action), & explores solutions collaboratively with coach & client. Coaches look to ask, “Where would you like to be & how can you get there?”. The process of life coaching takes the client’s current starting point as just that, a starting point, & is more action-based from that point forward. A coach will also clarify goals, identify obstacles & problematic behaviours in order to create action plans to achieve the client's desired results.

How do you know if you should get a counsellor/therapist or a coach?

The decision to get a counsellor/therapist or a coach is a very personal one.

However a few things to consider to help make your decision could be...

A life coach would be able to help you: achieve independence, resilience & self-love; clarify & achieve personal, body and/or career goals; identify and overcome obstacles & challenges to achieve goals; gain clarity on your purpose; achieve a work/life/school balance; have a leader who can hold you as powerful and capable no matter what; in every area of your life; turn healthy habits into behaviours that last.

A counsellor/therapist, on the other hand, focuses on: working through depression or anxiety that affects your ability to function at home, school or work; recovering from past traumas; exploring why past relationships have been destructive; working through thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself/others; surviving a parent’s divorce or loss of a loved one.

If you are still unsure, contact a few different coaches & counsellors to better understand what the right fit is for you. Remember, whether you chose counselling or coaching, one of the most important things is that you feel comfortable with this person & get a “good vibe” as this will make your journey much more successful.

What is a typical coaching session like?

Coaching is a series of one-on-one weekly sessions between you & your coach that usually last 45 to 60 minutes each. These sessions are either on the phone or video chat, whichever you prefer.

In the first session, your coach will go over your goals & what you hope to achieve through coaching. If you aren't clear on your goals yet, that’s okay. Our coaches are trained to ask you the right questions & actively listen to what you are saying to help you figure that out. The primary goal is to give you a clear vision of what you want to achieve, & then help you develop a personalized plan to achieve it.

During each session your coach will guide you through exercises that will bring you closer to achieving your goals & help you overcome any obstacles or challenges you may be faced with. At the end of each session, your coach will ask you to commit to completing certain tasks before the next session, which is referred to as action steps. These action steps will be specific actions which you & your coach have identified as being the most important things you can possibly do to move closer to your big goals.

Tell us a bit about your journey & why you decided to become a Life Coach?

In our teen years, I think it is natural to be confused about who you are & what you want in life. What career to follow, who to marry, when to settle down - it all feels overwhelming. I also struggled with all of this, plus my own mental health issues. I wanted someone who could tell me what to focus on & how to enjoy this crazy part in my life. This is when I found life coaching and it opened me up to a world of opportunities.

Being a coach is so rewarding because I can help others realize their strengths, values, achieve their goals & reach their dreams. Plus with my passion to help others, the ability to provide a safe judgment-free zone, & the courage to be authentically & uniquely you, it made the decision to pursue a career as a coach a no-brainer.

At the end of the day, it is so inspiring to empower others to follow their heart & keep taking that next step to find out where their journey can take them. Personally, I want to help people through understanding that journey, that is where my heart lies...& what we commit to every day at hello! True Self.

What is one of the biggest support young people are looking for when connecting with you?

Our programs are customized to each individual so it really depends on the person & their unique needs/goals. We offer support on many areas like: achieving life & career goals, weight loss, positive mindset, finding your purpose, healthy eating habits, creating positive relationships, body image & more self confidence...just to name a few. It’s really up to the client what they want support on.
