joie. is an amazing band from Spartanburg, South Carolina, comprised of 3 self-taught musicians. The band started late one night when Myra Hendley (vocals, synth), Ashley Moreira (keys), and Ginny Wolfe (guitar, synth, drum) simply made up their minds to start making music. With what started out as an idea to play acoustic sets in small venues, their list of covers quickly turned into originals and the girls realized, that together, they yearned to make a much bigger statement and an even bigger sound. In one short year joie. has accomplished much more than they would have ever imagined and are gaining a fan base in some of the most unexpected places. How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?

We always seem to have trouble answering this question! Although a seemingly cliché assertion, joie. really is a unique sound. While some of our fans have referenced bands like Florence and the Machine, Metric and Phantogram when searching for an appropriate comparison (all very nice compliments!), if we had to establish a genre, one could argue joie. falls in the alternative, pop-rock group.

What artists influence you or provide you with inspiration to draw from?

We are all so passionate about music and draw influences from a diverse range of artists. From Radiohead to sigur rós, Florence and the Machine to Beirut – we listen to a lot! The artists we tend to gravitate towards seem to embody the creative spirit that challenges traditional boundaries that genres often create within the world of music.

How do you hope your music will affect others?

We certainly hope our songs have a positive affect – our lyrics are heartfelt and honest. Whether one relates more with the melody, lyrics or eminent climax of one of our songs is irrelevant ; we strive to create music that moves the audience and we want the listener to be submersed, even if only temporarily, in a moment when listening to our music.

What inspires your music/lyric writing?

Life. People. Memories. Politics. Love. If we’re not put on this Earth to reflect and consider that which surrounds us, what are we here for? We draw inspiration from what affects us, both negatively and positively. To be honest, we’ve even discussed how music is therapeutic and how it has the ability to transcend one’s soul. If life was just about passing thought, without action, wouldn’t that be boring?! We might as well dream, aspire and, most importantly DO, while we’re here.

Do you ever get stage fright? If yes, how do you overcome it?

When we first started playing live shows, we were a little nervous and apprehensive. We really attribute our ability to conquer our nerves to our friendship – we are all very close friends and help motivate each other and keep each other positive!

Does music help to keep you grounded?

While music has the ability to transcend the Earthly realm, the process of creating and performing has taught us so much about ourselves and each other. As a group, we’ve grown closer with every performance and we’re constantly humbled by the support we receive. One of the benefits of being in a band (as opposed to being a solo artist) is that we all seem to keep each other grounded.

Best piece of advice anyone’s ever given you?

Can we answer this with a good ol’ quote?! "When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life." John Lennon

What brings you joy? Or joie?

The answer to this questions is quite simple, really – we find joy in music (another cliché, we know). Being on stage has become one of the most liberating experiences and we hope to be performing for bigger and bigger audiences, for years to come.

Random fun fact about each band member?

We all play by ear, for the most part. Aside from some lessons when we were younger, we’re all self-motivated, self- taught musicians!
