Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is the most effective treatment for Avoidant Personality Disorder. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), schema therapy, or psychodynamic therapy can help individuals challenge negative self-beliefs, reduce avoidance, and gradually build confidence in relationships.
Therapy may include:
- Learning healthier thought patterns.
- Practising social skills in a safe environment.
- Setting small, achievable goals for exposure to feared situations.
Medication
While no medication specifically treats AVPD, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications may help with co-occurring conditions like depression or generalized anxiety.
Building Support Networks
Developing trust and connection takes time. Having supportive friends, family, or a counsellor who listens without judgment can make a significant difference. Joining peer or group therapy can also help reduce feelings of isolation.
Helping a Friend or Loved One with AVPD
If someone you care about may be living with Avoidant Personality Disorder:
- Be patient and kind. Building trust may take time.
- Encourage gentle social engagement. Offer low-pressure opportunities to connect.
- Avoid criticism. Even well-intentioned comments can reinforce feelings of inadequacy.
- Suggest professional help. Offer to help find resources or accompany them to an appointment if they’re open to it.
- Take care of yourself. Supporting someone with a personality disorder can be emotionally demanding. Remember your own self-care.
