Physical activity is not just for your body’s physical health, it can also be an incredible way to improve mental health and clarity! The physical benefits of exercise are well known and promoted, but the benefits that it can have on mental health are often overlooked. Moving your body can help relieve and ward off symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and more. It also improves memory, helps with sleep, and boosts overall mood through positive endorphins! Many people exercise frequently because of the way it makes them feel mentally. It releases feel good chemicals in your brain and can take your mind off of worries, making it a great way to take a break from anything. This is why I’m giving you 7 tips on how to use exercise to help your own mental health!
-
Any movement is good movement! Many people get worried about their workouts not being good enough, or how many calories they burned, but the truth is that moving your body in any capacity is beneficial.
-
Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water throughout your day not only benefits your physical health but your mental health as well. It helps with cognitive focus, productivity, and energy. It’s recommended that everyone drinks up to 3 litres of water a day!
-
If you can, get outside for your physical activity. Fresh air can boost your mood and reduce stress levels. Sometimes being cooped up inside makes it hard to enjoy moving your body. Getting outside for even just a relaxing walk can be extremely beneficial for your mind and body.
-
Don’t beat yourself up about your physical activity or routine. Keeping up with a consistent routine is a lot of work, especially during these trying times. Be kind to yourself and try looking at the positives you are achieving no matter how small. Nobody is perfect and beating yourself up about that will only keep you from feeling your best.
-
Find activity you enjoy. So many times we hear friends talking about their favourite workouts or activities and think we should try those things too, but sometimes an intense workout or a slow yoga isn’t the right fit. It’s okay to do things differently than others. Everyone’s body and lifestyles respond to things differently and finding what you truly enjoy, instead of forcing yourself to do what others are doing, is the best way to cultivate a balanced routine.
-
Choose a workout buddy. We’ve spent so much time alone recently, and it can be hard to stay motivated to work on yourself when you’re feeling isolated. A friend you are comfortable with can be a great way to keep you feeling ready to move your body.

Don’t compare yourself to others. As mentioned before, so many times people are influenced by what they see others doing and find themselves trying to achieve the same things. However, it’s so important to find what works for you and what brings you the most joy. Most people share the best parts of themselves and we forget to realize that they have struggles too. Focusing on yourself and the things your achieving, rather than that of others, can help keep you grounded and grateful for the things you’re accomplishing.
