As we celebrate Black History Month, we want to take a moment to recognize and highlight black-owned businesses in Canada. Not only are there many amazing heroes in Canadian history but there are also so many pioneers working for a better future today. Supporting black-owned businesses can be one way to level the gaps in our system.
During my research, I stumbled upon two amazing lists featuring businesses in London, Ontario, and Canada. The first list is compiled by the London Environmental Network. It features more than 120 businesses across London and Middlesex, organized into 25 different categories such as food, education, health and fitness and more. One of the best parts about this list is that it was created in collaboration with community members.
I also came across this list of black-owned businesses in Canada created by Shop Local Canada. It’s perfect if you’re looking for gifts and love online shopping. You’ll find a wide range of products, including children’s books, jewelry, candles, and more. They have a lot of options and there is something for everyone!
This month and always, it’s essential to be mindful of where we shop. Where we spend our money can be a great way to lift up Black business owners, and it can be one of the many ways we can build a more equitable Canada. Take some time to explore these lists or research businesses in your community and show them your support!
