I finally had the chance to watch Inside Out 2 in theatres and I can confidently say it did not disappoint! I cried, laughed, and felt so many emotions at once.
Not only does the movie have beautiful graphics and an engaging storyline, but it also delves into the complexities of mental health and emotions in a way that is easy to understand and relatable to all ages. The portrayal of our emotions, suppressed memories, high expectations, sense of self, and relationships was incredibly well-executed.
In this sequel, they introduce anxiety as a new emotion. I was really curious to see how they were going to portray it, as I have experienced anxiety and panic attacks since I was very young. They crafted this overly caffeinated character who is always on edge, overthinking everything and seeking security through meticulous planning for worst-case scenarios. They also showed what happens when anxiety takes control and how it impacts our thoughts, imagination, behaviours and sleep. It accurately represented my own emotion of anxiety, one I have struggled with and villainized for so many years. After watching Inside Out 2, I gained a new perspective on my anxiety and how it is trying to protect me in its own way. It’s not perfect, and I just need to befriend it and guide it out of the storm of worries and racing thoughts.Â
I’ve tried to keep this review very general to avoid spoilers, as I highly recommend you watch this movie! It offers a fun way to understand various mental health concepts and help you know that you’re not alone in your feelings. Watching this movie might be a great starting point for conversations about mental health with your friends and family.
