A Burning Room of Responsibilities
When I first heard “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer, I was in a stressful time of my life. I was moving into my senior year of high school with all new responsibilities, pressures to achieve good grades, extracurriculars and, of course, apply to universities. Everything felt like it was stacking up, and I didn’t believe I had the ability to manage everything, like a “burning room.”
The Power of Music
When I heard the song I was immediately drawn in by its smooth and calming electric guitar, but I also recognized that it had a layer of tension in the notes. The guitar almost sounded like it was crying out. Picking up my own guitar and playing the song helped me make sense of the period of life I was in. The song captured the many pressures and insecurities I was facing but also offered some calm in the midst of it all. I recognized that I couldn’t stop all the things around me, but I did have the ability to navigate through all the chaos.
